Assassin’s Creed (2016)
starring Michael Fassbender

Although very weird and culty, and a bit gloomy, this movie does well to hold attention with its general high quality of production and occasional fast action scene. It’s not dissimilar to Fassbender‘s X-Men movies in this regard — pretty much all parts of it, just with superpowers tamed down a bit, and less of a juvenile comicbook vibe — more of a hospital based action-drama-horror vibe but no more horror than a movie like Blade for example — the focus is still just about action oriented enough to appeal to an action movie fan who doesn’t like horror.

By 20 minutes in, with its mix of weird unpleasant low gloom and cool concept with fast action, it already looks set for a rating just Above Average (for the smooth action hero movie connoisseur). With half an hour to go, the sentiment hasn’t really changed. Above Average seems like a fair score, considering its pros & cons. It’s like a poundshop Matrix — or Equilibrium — with some of the scenes, vibes and narratives it attempts to create. Not on that level of course, but a weak attempt at something vaguely similar to a simplified version of it, perhaps.
